If there is one name that Kolkata fans have come to fondly call their own after Sourav Ganguly and Gautam Gambhir, it is Andre Russell. However, the all-rounder’s immaculate performances both with the bat and ball resulted in Jamaica Tallawahs’ victory over Trinbago Knight Riders in the CPL.

Never ever drop a catch of Andre Russell otherwise it may cost you dearly. When Ali Khan, who took three wickets inside the first three overs to reduce Jamaica Tallawahs to 15 for 3 in a record run-chase of 224 runs, dropped the all-rounder’s catch at deep square leg in the seventh over off Fawad Ahmed, he would have hardly imagined what the team would face after that. And as it turned out, Russell played a magnificent innings of such audacity that left everyone watching the game stunned and TKR perplexed. The Jamaican went onto score a 40-ball hundred, which was the fastest in the CPL.

While the strike rate reveals the story itself, the context of the innings can never be taken out of consideration. Coming into bat when Tallawahs were struggling at 41 for 5, Russell initially built a partnership with Kennar Lewis to take the team to 86 for 5 in the 10th over. By then, the team was in search of a further 138 runs in the final 10 overs and then the Jamaican decided to put on the accelerator and took the team down the line.

While the innings was insane enough to take notice, he had already stamped his authority in the first innings of the game by picking up a hat-trick. After Colin Munro, Brendon McCullum, and Chris Lynn helped Trinbago get a very good start, Russell, in the last over, dismissed McCullum, Darren Bravo, and Dinesh Ramdin to secure the second hat-trick of the CPL history.
