India’s recent loss to England at Lord’s became the fifth consecutive Test match which they lost against England and continued to extend their miserable record away from home. Virat Kohli & Co. have won just one of their last 11 matches on foreign soil, which will be a major cause for concern.

Team India almost clinched a victory during the first Test at Edgbaston only to crumble on the final day as the home team recorded a memorable 31-run victory against the men in blue. But, there were a lot of positives to take from the game despite the defeat and all expected Virat Kohli & Co. to bounce back stronger at the Lord’s in the second Test.

But, what unfolded at the Mecca of Cricket was nothing short of a nightmare for the visitors as the entire Indian team just failed to perform. R Ashwin was the highest scorer for India with 29 and 33 to his name while the likes of Murali Vijay, KL Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane and even Kohli could not get going at Lord’s.

India’s performance along with England’s sheer brilliance with the ball and bat ensured that the hosts’ would record a win by an innings and 159 runs and go 2-0 up in the five-match Test series. As a result of which, India’s record in England now stood at five losses from five Test matches.

India have been a top performer in Test cricket for the past few decades now but their win-loss on record on English soil has always been a blot on their overall Test record. Out of a total 59 Test matches that India have played on English soil, they have won just six, which should be a huge cause for concern for Indian authorities.

If we start to factor in India’s away record in general, things start to look worse for Virat Kohli & Co. Over the last decade, the Indian cricket team continued to struggle away from home and have recorded just one win from 11 Test matches. The loss at Lord’s also meant that India now have the highest number of losses (9) in the last decade as far as Test matches in England were concerned.

Another interesting fact is that even though India’s sworn rivals, Pakistan, are ranked below them in the Test rankings, their performance in England has been a whole lot better. Their four wins from 10 matches are certainly better than that of India.

India’s only win in recent years came in 2014 when brilliant performances from Ajinkya Rahane and Bhuvneshwar Kumar led them to a victory at the Lord’s. But considering their trend in England and with 0.11 percent win percentage, India are just a little better than Bangladesh, who have played two and lost two Tests in England.

A deeper look at the numbers revealed that India’s major area of concern would be the batting department. Indian batsmen have averaged 24 per wicket on English soil and have failed to come out with solid partnerships. However, the Australian and South African cricket teams have averaged 34 and 33 respectively.
