Former South African cricketer AB de Villiers has revealed that the pressure and expectations of performing every time at the international level became unbearable. He added that he is relieved to have quit from all forms of international cricket but is still willing to play other T20 leagues.

De Villiers, who stunned the cricketing world by retiring in May after playing 114 Test matches, 228 ODIs and 78 T20Is for South Africa, spoke about his career as a player and the pros and cons of the profession. Although de Villiers felt relieved after retiring from the highest level, he did mention his eagerness to play other T20 leagues around the globe.

ā€œIt (pressure) has been unbearable at times, the pressure you have to face, performing day in and day out. The expectations that you put on yourself, from fans, from the country and from the coaches. Itā€™s huge and itā€™s something that is always on your mind,ā€ de Villiers said.

However, the 34-year-old stated that the feeling of scoring centuries was something completely different which could never be replicated.

ā€œI know nothing will compare to that feeling of scoring hundreds in a big game and thousands of people chanting your name. But in all fairness, it is definitely something that I am going to miss,ā€ he told ā€˜The Independentā€™ newspaper.

Speaking of his retirement, de Villiers said that he feels relieved as life has become simpler. He further added that the players who say they do not feel the pressure of international cricket are lying to everyone and themselves.

ā€œI definitely feel relieved as everything has become simpler and there is no pressure as such. But I truly believe that the players who tell you that they donā€™t feel the pressure of international cricket, being away from home for months at a time, are lying to everyone and themselves,ā€ De Villiers added.

De Villiers concluded by saying that he is happy playing the odd T20 tournament, doing bits and pieces of promotional work, and nurturing young cricketers.

ā€œIā€™ve always been a fan of helping the Associate nations and youā€™ve seen some fantastic talent come through of late. Iā€™m still going to play for a few years around the world,ā€ he concluded.
