Rohit Sharma may be a fine, or rather one of the best, limited-overs players of the modern era, but he certainly lacks the temperament to play Test cricket. It was on show today when his moment of madness resulted in him playing a terrible shot to be dismissed after hitting Nathan Lyon for a six.

It was touted as India’s best chance to secure a series victory in Australia, but the batsman's lack of application meant they got off to a disastrous start. However, the cushion that came with the inclusion of Rohit Sharma, India still had hope and thought it would be his best chance to announce his arrival. 

Rohit did live up to it and along with Pujara, he steadied the innings, putting on 45 runs. While the limited-overs vice-captain was increasingly on the attack, hitting as many as three sixes in his 37, his innings would much rather be remembered for his bizarre approach. 

In the 38th over, Rohit tried to unsettle Lyon with a slog sweep and didn't quite connect that well, and though Marcus Harris grabbed it at deep square, the momentum took him past the ropes. It was a clear sign of Lyon’s approach and he wanted Rohit to buy to that. And think what, Rohit did as well.

On the very next ball, Rohit, in his bid to unsettle Lyon, tried to slog sweep over deep square leg. It was always a gamble with the ball turning a bit and due to his lack of proper feet movement, he got a top edge that went way up. After failing the previous one, Harris didn’t have any trouble this time around. An absolute lack of awareness which justified why Rohit shouldn’t be given any more chances in the red-ball format of the game.
