After holding on to the No. 1 spot in ICC Test rankings despite losing the Test series 2-1, India have a chance of leapfrogging South Africa to first place in ODI rankings as well. Here are the scenarios that India would like to face and avoid in the ongoing ODI series, for them to go top.

According to ICC ODI rankings, South Africa (121) sit at the top with India (119), England (116) and New Zealand (115) following them. With neither England nor New Zealand playing any ODI series at the moment, India have a genuine chance of surpassing the table-toppers by the end of this month.

India, after winning the first ODI, have negated any chances of the series getting whitewashed now, which was a huge concern ahead of the third Test in Wanderers. However, this has hardly done any damage to South Africa’s spot in ODI rankings either and there is high chance that the Proteas would bounce back into the competition and fast.

India’s record in South Africa is quite precarious where they have won just 6 ODIs against the Proteas in the twenty-nine matches that they have played, so far. Despite the consistency that the Men in Blue have shown under Virat Kohli’s captaincy in all the three formats of the game, the visitors will have to sweat a lot to win the series.

As per the points table, the only way India could leapfrog the hosts is by winning the six-match series comprehensively. India would need to win four games at least, if not 6-0 or 5-1, which will take them to 120, level on points with the hosts and to the number one spot. Any other results, like South Africa levelling the series 3-3 or SA winning the series 4-2 would work in favour of the hosts.

Though South Africa’s supreme record against India at home hardly sees the series going lopsided, despite India’s domineering win in Durban on Thursday, India have also never previously visited the rainbow nation in such  tremendous form with such a prolific captain leading the side.
