Aditya Tare feels Prithvi Shaw needs to add finishing to his game
Mumbai skipper Aditya Tare has asked Prithvi Shaw to show more responsibility and add the art of finishing to his game to become more successful. Mumbai qualified for the Vijay Hazare Trophy's knockout stages after two years after beating Goa by 4 wickets thanks to Shaw and Tare's half-centuries.
Shaw has been crucial to Mumbai’s progress in the Vijay Hazare Trophy this season. Since returning from New Zealand, the player has registered two fifties in three games and has drawn praised from all quarters including his skipper. However, Tare is also of the opinion that the 18-year-old would have to improve his game finishing skills.
"He is pretty young and still has to learn the art of finishing matches. In both games, he got to fifties and got out. Today was an example. He could have ended up with a century and saw the team through. That's something he needs to add to his game, take up the responsibility from now on to seal games. He can work on it and prove everyone, batting up the order he can also finish games," said Tare, reported TOI.
Even in the U-19 World Cup, Shaw’s innings as an opener read 16, 94, 57*, 40, 41 and 29, clearly hinting at his abilities to provide a strong start to a side but not go all the way. Mumbai’s win against Goa at the SSN College Ground on Monday has now taken the side to the quarterfinals of the domestic limited-overs tournament, where they now sit second with 16 points with one more league match left against table toppers Andhra Pradesh (20 points).
Apart from Shaw, Tare (59) and Suryakumar Yadav (71) also pitched in crucial knocks in the win over Goa, which has pretty much summed up Mumbai’s campaign so far. The consistent performances of Mumbai’s experienced batting order have kept the pressure light on the nascent bowling unit.
“That's what we need to do. We have a solid batting unit. We have got players from No 1 to No 7 who are match-winners on their day. We can give an extra cushion to our inexperienced bowling unit, bit for Dhawal Kulkarni, by scoring those extra runs. Our bowlers have had a great experience in this tournament and it's a good sign for us going forward," said Tare.
