India registered a 73-run win in the 5th match of the ODI series against South Africa yesterday which confirmed their top position in the ICC Rankings. If South Africa managed to win the last ODI of the series, the visitors will maintain the top spot with 121 points and SA will end up with 119.

Before the start of the series, India were at the second position of the ICC ODI Rankings with 119 points and the list was led by South Africa. However, after sealing the series 4-1, India successfully earned three points to move to the top position while the hosts faced 1 point loss and now find themselves at 118 points.

The sixth and last match of the series will be played on February 16 in Centurion. If somehow the Proteas wins the game on Friday, India will maintain its top position with 121 points while SA will earn only one point to finish at 119. And if Team India increase the margin of winning the series 5-1, then they will end on 123 points and South Africa will end the ODI series with 117.

In the upcoming series between New Zealand and England, if Eoin Morgan-led English team managed to win all the five games, then they can claim the second position on the ICC ODI list pushing South Africa to the third.

Under Kohli’s captaincy, the Indian cricket team got the No. 1 position after winning the first two games but to retain that place even after the end of the series they need just two more wins. India was on the verge of winning the first four games but the hosts made a come back in the series by winning the Pink ODI in Johannesburg but a 73-run win in Port Elizabeth handed them their first ever series win on the South African soil as well as the top rank.

This is the first time since October 2017 and fifth in their ODI history that India secured the top of the rankings.
