’Triple-ton’ Karun Nair to lead Karnataka in the Vijay Hazare trophy

Karun Nair who shot to stardom with his triple-ton versus England last year will be leading Karnataka in the Vijay Hazare Trophy due to an injury to captain Vinay Kumar. Nair has been in fine form in the tournament, and along with teammate Mayank Agarwal, has played some good knocks this year.

Karun Nair announced his arrival on the biggest stage last year, as he blasted a triple century versus a highly-rated English side during their tour of India. But he has subsequently found himself in and out of the national team ever since that knock due to inconsistent performances with the bat.

But the seasoned batsman has performed magnificently in the ongoing Vijay Hazare trophy, following up on a strong outing in the Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy last, where Nair famously smashed a 51 ball century versus Jharkhand in one of the matches.

In Karnataka’s previous match versus Odisha, the opening duo of Nair and Mayank Agarwal both hit centuries as Karnataka ran riot to ultimately defeat Orissa by a margin of 133 runs. Agarwal and Nair added 190 runs for the opening wicket to put Karnataka on track for a big score. Agarwal scored 102 from 94 balls with two sixes and ten fours while Nair smashed 100 from 111 deliveries with 12 fours to his name.

Karnataka will be without the services of skipper and lead pacer R Vinay Kumar in the knockout stage of the Vijay Hazare Trophy which will be begin in New Delhi on February 21. Kumar is nursing an elbow niggle and had been advised to get some rest. In his absence, Nair will lead the side, following on his earlier tryst with leadership in two of Karnataka's group matches, against Odisha and Railways.

Also absent from the 15-member squad is Abhimanyu Mithun, who has not featured in Karnataka’s last two games. Fast bowler Ronit More and State U-19 batsman Devdutt Padikkal have also been called up.

Karnataka Team: Karun Nair (Capt.), Mayank Agarwal, R. Samarth, Pavan Deshpande, B.R. Sharath, K. Gowtham, Shreyas Gopal, Prasidh Krishna, T. Pradeep, Anirudha Joshi, J. Suchith, Ritesh Bhatkal, Pravin Dubey, Ronit More, and Devdutt
