US athlete Christian Coleman broke the previous 60m indoor world record by 0.05sec off the earlier time set by Maurice Greene in Madrid in 1998 as he finished the race in 6.34s. The 21-year-old stormed onto the tracks with a 0.149 reaction time to move ahead of Baker, who finished second at 6.40s.

Coleman was believed to have broken Maurice Greene's 60m record at a meeting in Clemson, South Carolina last month on January 19, where he finished the race at a time 6.37s. However, that time did not stand because the meeting at which the race took place did not have electronic starting blocks.

However, the rising United States athlete managed to finish the 60m indoor race with an impressive time of 6.34s in Albuquerque to set a new world record in the 60m indoor race category. Coleman's time was 0.05sec lesser than the existing world indoor record that was set by Maurice Greene in Madrid, Spain in 1998.

21-year old Coleman has been touted as a future Olympic medalist as he has shown great promise in the past few years. Coleman has had a somewhat of a rollercoaster year ever since the meeting in Clemson, South Carolina last month.

Coleman has previously clocked impressive times all throughout his college days and ran the fastest 100 meters time of 2017 with 9.82sec. But the young sprinter was beaten in the World final as he claimed silver in London as Justin Gatlin finished first while Jamaican legend Usain Bolt finished third.

Coleman will lead a young and skilled American team to next month's world indoor championships as the top-two finishers in each event in New Mexico will secure berths for Birmingham, England.

"I just love racing in the big races, when everybody's watching. I just flourish in those moments. It's not really in my personality, but when the lights are on, it just comes out." Coleman said off Reuters sources.
