The IPL mega-auction started quite unpredictably on Saturday as the swashbuckling Chris Gayle went unsold, while Kings XI Punjab decided to let their superstar, Glenn Maxwell, go. R Ashwin and Gautam Gambhir also were surprisingly sold to Punjab and Delhi respectively as the marquee bracket ended.

While many had expected Royal Challengers Bangalore to stick with the likes of Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers over the explosive Chris Gayle, hardly anyone could see the West Indian going unsold in the first go at the mega-auction. Though the Jamaican opener will be available at a later stage of the auction, this gave a huge sign of things to come in the two days of melodrama that has just ensued.

In another shocker, two-time IPL champions Kolkata Knight Riders chose not to retain Gautam Gambhir for as less as 2.80 crores, which looked like a brilliant deal for a successful captain cum opener as Delhi Daredevils ran away with it. Despite MS Dhoni assuring that Chennai Super Kings would go all out for the veteran Ravichandran Ashwin in the auction, they conceded at the end to KXIP with the price at only 7.60 crores.

Punjab themselves, however, shocked many when they chose to part ways with their long-serving superstar Glenn Maxwell, as the Aussie all-rounder moved to Delhi for a staggering 9 crores.
