Virat Kohli became the fastest player ever in men's cricket to reach 2000 T20I runs as he scored an unbeaten 20 in India's first T20I win against England. Kohli came into the game as the fourth-highest scorer after New Zealand's Martin Guptill and Brendon McCullum, and Pakistan's Shoaib Malik.

Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli managed to break yet another record on Tuesday after returning from a neck injury that he had suffered towards the end of the IPL. The RCB skipper needed just 8 runs to become the fastest man and the second Indian after Mithali Raj to reach 2000 runs in T20Is. His initial 1983 runs in the shortest format came in at an average of 50.84 in just 54 innings ever since he made his Test debut back in 2012.

Internationally, Kohli became the fourth player to attain the 2000 mark in this format. The first player to achieve the feat was New Zealand's Martin Guptill with 2271 runs to his name, who reached the milestone within 68 innings. He was followed by former teammate Brendon McCullum who had garnered 2140 runs before he retired. The third position had been attributed to Pakistan's Shoaib Malik who is currently on 2039 runs, played 92 innings to get to the milestone.

During India's tour of South Africa, Kohli became the fastest player to reach the 17,000-run mark in international cricket, achieving the feat in only his 363rd innings. Kohli left behind South Africa's Hashim Amla, who had reached the 17000-run mark in his 381st innings last year. Kohli was also the quickest to 15,000 and 16000-run marks achieving both the milestone in 2017.

The Indian team can see more players entering that bracket with opener Rohit Sharma following Kohli. The opener is just he is just 19 shy of reaching 2000 T20i runs and would look to attain it in the two remaining T20ls against England. Suresh Raina is sitting third with 1578 runs to his name, but it could be a far-off shot for him to achieve that milestone.
