Sreenath Arvind, who was announced the Karnataka bowling coach last week, has revealed that his appointment came as a huge surprise for him as well. Yere Goud and Arvind replaced the coaching duo of PV Shashikanth and GK Anil Kumar, following their one-year stint that started in June last year.

After reaching the semi-final of Ranji Trophy and winning the Vijay Hazare Trophy last season, the state team of Karnataka has been going to have some major changes heading into the new season. Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) had announced last week that Yere Goud and former India international Sreenath Arvind, are appointed as the batting coach and bowling coach respectively.

Arvind has played 56 first-class games for Karnataka, picking up 186 wickets at an average of 23.94. He also represented India in one T20I where he took a solitary wicket. Earlier this year, Arvind had announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. PV Shashikanth and GK Anil Kumar, who were replaced even after success in the last season, have understandably expressed their displeasure.  “This is ridiculous. I don’t get how they could remove us. It’s not like the team crashed out in the league stage,” fumed Anil. “I’m happy for Goud and Arvind but I think they have been unfair to us. This isn’t how you treat coaches who have done well in their first year,” said an infuriated Anil, reported Wisden India.

Having retired, Arvind had opted to apply for the coaching position. However, he did not expect to get the role as early as June. “I was very surprised. I wasn’t sure they called the right person because I really had no clue that they would consider me,” said a surprised Arvind.

Over the last few seasons Arvind has taken up the role of mentoring young pacers in the side. Even R Vinay Kumar and Abhimanyu Mithun have benefitted from his expertise. Hence, he has been of the opinion that the transition between a player-mentor and bowling coach will be an easy one for him.

“I have always mentored our young bowlers so this is no different. I don’t think there is a big difference. Honestly though, these players are so good they don’t need coaching in the true sense of coaching. They only want someone to guide them from time to time and that’s really not a tough job. It requires an understanding of players as individuals and that is something I have done that for a while so it’ll be a relatively easy role for me to slip into,” he added.
