Former Indian captain Kapil Dev has had his say on the ongoing the yo-yo test issue stating that it should not be employed as an exclusive criterion for player selection. According to him, match fitness is something that needs to be taken into consideration along with overall fitness.

Recently, the Indian Team Management had made yo-yo test the mandatory criteria to determine the selection of a player in the Indian national teams. After Ambati Rayudu was dismissed from the England tour for flunking the yo-yo test, the test seems to be in a constant controversy.Ā Kapil Dev is of the opinion that match fitness is more important than any other criteria. Hence, the test should not be the sole criteria of evaluation, determining a Player's eligibility in the team.

ā€œEven football legend Diego Maradona wasn't the fastest runner but whenever he had the ball, he was the fastest. Similarly, every cricketer has a different way of responding to fitness drill. A bowler can perhaps clear the yo-yo test easily than a batsman. But this isn't the ultimate test to judge a player. It comes down Ā to your performances on the field and cricketers should be judged only on the basis of their on field performances,ā€ Kapil Dev said in an interaction with the TOI.

ā€œSunil Gavaskar may not have enjoyed running more than 15 minutes as a part of his fitness drill but he could bat for three days. Even the likes of Anil Kumble, VVS Laxman and Sourav Ganguly may or may not have cleared this version of the yo-yo test, but they turned out to be some of the Best Players India has produced."
