BCCI to conduct re-examination for Level-I Umpires
BCCI acting president CK Khanna has revealed that the board has decided to conduct a re-examination of the candidates who wrote the Level-I examination on June 10, 2017. Interestingly, only 2% (1 out of 35) passed during the June 10 phase while 42% of the candidates cleared the June 7 phase.
In the wake of numerous complaints about irregularities in the question paper set for Level I Umpires Test, the BCCI has ordered re-examination for the candidates who had appeared on June 10 last year in Indore and Visakhapatnam.Ā The Level 1 examination was held on different dates in two phases. The first phase was conducted in Mumbai and Bangalore for umpires hailing from Mumbai, Karnataka,Ā and Vidarbha on June 7 while the second test was conducted on June 10 in Indore and Vishakhapatnam for the candidates from the North, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh.Ā
There was a perception that the question paper set on June 7 was of basic nature with 42 percent candidates clearing the examination. On the other hand, only one out of 35 candidates passed during the June 10 phase examination. It is believed that most questions that appeared in the June 10 phase were hypothetical in nature.Ā
Former ICC umpire, Vineet Kulkarni had set both papers and there were complaints about the discrepancies in the question papers set. There have been questions raised in BCCI as to why Kulkarni was allowed to set question papers when his performance as an umpire has not been up to the mark (he was removed from the ICC panel for his poor performance).
