Sourav Ganguly has come out in support of Virat Kohli’s decision to miss the Afghanistan Test and asserted that Team India will still beat Afghanistan in the one-off Test. Ganguly also stated that Kohli wouldn’t have missed the Test if it was any other team and praised his passion to win in England.

Virat Kohli's decision to miss the Afghanistan Test and play county cricket instead has not gone down well with everyone. Fingers have been pointed at Kohli for not giving priority to Test cricket for the country. However, former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly has come out in support of Kohli and has backed his decision to skip the Afghanistan Test. He showed admiration for his passion to win in England and asserted that captain’s potential must be judged on the team’s performance overseas.

"I think since the side is Afghanistan, he has chosen to play county. If it would have been any other team, he would have not gone. It just shows how important the England tour is for him. I have always maintained, a captain's recognition is how well he and his team does overseas. As a captain, he wants to win (in England) so that is the reason (he has gone to play county)," said Ganguly at a promotional event for ‘Complan’, reported Cricnext.

"India will still beat Afghanistan without Virat. And hopefully, they can do well in England also."

Ajinkya Rahane has been given the responsibility to lead the Test side against Afghanistan but he did not find a place in ODI and T20I squads for the tour of England. Ganguly was surprised to see Rahane's exclusion from the limited overs squad and insisted that he is a quality player and should have been included in the team.

"I am surprised Rahane is not in the team. He should have been in the team. he has been moved around too much, he is a quality player," Ganguly said.

BCCI has maintained its stand of not playing Day-Night Test by ruling out the possibility of a pink ball Test in Australia. However, Ganguly termed pink-ball Tests as the future of Test cricket, which the country will have to embrace someday. India and Bangladesh are the only two nations who have not supported the concept of pink-ball cricket. They both have avoided playing pink-ball cricket all together. But Ganguly felt that the Indian team has the potential to win a day/night Test.

"Day/Night Test is the way forward. Every country has to play Day-Night Test. India has reservations but that's a long term future for Test cricket," Ganguly said.

"They (Indian side) are a good side, they will win D/N Test matches also. It's just a different ball, I don't think there's any other difference. And they have such class players, they can win."
