India vs Windies | We just don’t play against India but learn from them, says Nic Pothas

Windies assistant coach, Nic Pothas, has asserted that the India tour will act as a learning curve for his side under the leadership of Jason Holder and will benefit them in the coming years. Pothas also heaped praise on the young team who have been going toe-to-toe against the Indians so far.

India have largely been the dominant side in the ongoing series against West Indies so far as they enjoy a 2-1 lead ahead of a final showdown in Kerala on Thursday. That being said, the young Windies team have shown signs of promise over the past couple of weeks as they have gone toe-to-toe against Virat Kohli & Co.

And WI assistant coach, Nic Pothas, revealed that the India tour will serve as a learning experience for the Caribbean outfit as they prepare for a T20I series that will follow after the one-dayers.

“India is a great team to learn from. They have quality batsman and enough bench strength. We just don’t play against India but learn from this team. It is a great opportunity for the players to learn when they play against teams of this quality,” Pothas said, reported The Hindu.

The former South African wicket-keeper heaped praise on the young squad who have shown signs of promise over the last couple of weeks on Indian soil.

“It is very young team. I think when you play a game at this level, whatever sport it may be, it always comes down to execution (of plans) for a longer period of time.

“We have seen that we can execute it for a short period of time. The challenge is to execute it for 100 overs. If you want to beat India, England, Australia, South Africa, Pakistan we need to execute the plan for 100 overs and that requires skill, physical ability and fitness. You need to be fit to play in these conditions. The fitness effects your execution of skills. The young guys are coping with the challenges well,” added Pothas.

Pothas singled out WI skipper Jason Holder for praise as he called him a ‘World-class cricketer’. Holder has put in some commendable performances as captain and lead his team with class against a strong Indian team over the course of the tour.

“Jason is a world class performer. He leads by example, is a leader of his group and commands a lot of respect.

“His performance speaks for itself and is vital for the team. But he is a human being and not a robot to perform consistently for 365 days a year. He needs rest but we don’t have quality player to replace him,’’ he added.
