Virat Kohli hopes for consistent performances from his batsmen in Australia series

Indian skipper Virat Kohli has stated that the bowlers’ performances should be backed by Indian batsmen and that should happen on a consistent basis. In the previous series against England, many a time, batsmen faltered despite the bowlers performing exceedingly well and India lost the series 1-4.

India swept a small two-match Test series easily with both batsmen and bowlers doing commendably well. Though the batsmen came good in the series against West Indies, they have been inconsistent in the recent past with the skipper sounding similar concerns.

"I'm really happy to see these guys fit and hungry. It's up to the batsmen to do the rest of the job. I think this game was tougher for the batsmen. This first innings was more challenging than the last one (in Rajkot)," said Kohli at the post-match presentation.

India’s longer format vice-captain has not been in the best of the forms with only a couple of good innings to show for in the series against England and even in the series against West Indies, he managed one fine innings in the second Test match where he scored 80 runs. And Kohli backed Rahane to come out good.

"Jinx has been batting really well, he got runs in Nottingham and we won the Test. He wanted runs under the belt. His partnership with Pant is something we want to see more of," said Kohli.

The Indian team is in a phase of transformation with new faces being added almost every second Test match. Skipper Kohli also went on to praise the newcomers in the team.

"If you look at the three new guys (Vihari in England, Shaw and Pant) who've come in, they've grabbed their opportunities. I think all these things are a big positive. But from this Test I want to single out Umesh.

India was playing the second Test match with the services of only two pace bowlers and Shardul Thakur was injured after bowling only ten balls in the match, which reduced the team to a one-pacer entity. In such a scenario experienced Umesh Yadav took the responsibility on his shoulders and picked ten wickets in the match to become only the third Indian bowler to pick ten wickets at home.

"Shardul broke down and to take ten wickets is great. It was an outstanding performance. We're all happy for him. I think it's a great luxury to have (several seamers). We have a headache to choose out of so many good quality bowlers. That's a better position to be in than looking for bowlers," added the skipper.

On the other hand, West Indies team lost the series miserably and skipper of the side Jason Holder had no qualms in accepting the fact.

"A little disappointed with the way we batted in the second innings. I thought we fought our way back in the game after the fightback yesterday we tried to push forward today. But credit to India, they played commendably and did the basics better than us," said Holder.
