Harbhajan Singh has stated that he would go with Kuldeep Yadav as the first-choice spinner for the West Indies for the way he takes the ball away from the left-handers and his wicket-taking abilities. He has also added that Ravichandran Ashwin's superb record against the Windies works in his favour.

In India's last tour of West Indies, Ashwin was the wrecker in chief - both with the bat and ball - as he bagged 17 wickets to be awarded the Man of the Series. While the off-spinner's career has always been on an upward trajectory, he seems to be struggling a bit in the last one year. That was compounded by untimely injuries which worked against his favour and that was probably led to Harbhajan Singh calling Kuldeep the first-choice spinner in the team.

"On current form, my No. 1 spinner will surely be Kuldeep for the way he takes the ball away from the left-handers and his wicket-taking abilities. Ravindra Jadeja, too, has made most of his chances in Tests. Probably the only thing working in Ashwin's favour is his superb record against West Indies," Harbhajan told TOI.

Over the last few years, the Tamil Nadu off-spinner has always been preferred over everyone else in the home and away tours but he missed the last two Tests in Australia in December-January on account of fitness, and when Kuldeep got his chance in the last match in Sydney. The left-arm wrist-spinner actually made the chance count by taking five wickets in Sydney.

India will start their Test Championship campaign with a two-game bout against the Windies in Antigua on Tuesday, with each Test carrying 60 Championship points.
