Jason Holder reckons that his batsmen have shown poor temperament by gifting their wickets away to the bowlers, especially in the first Test against India at Antigua. The hosts were bundled out for just 100 on Day four to register a whopping 318-run loss in the first of two matches.
It seems as though the narrative for the Windies will continue the same – good bowling performances, decent fielding effort, and an abysmal display with the bat to rub it off. It brought about their downfall in the World Cup and it did so again in the first match of their ICC Test Championship campaign.
“We fell short of runs by some distance on a good wicket. I have been looking for solutions for a little while now. Each batsman has got to seriously look at themselves in the mirror. I think more often than not we’ve been gifting our wickets, not having the opposition work for it. I think that is one area we can work on,” Holder said at the post-match press conference, reported Cricbuzz.
The skipper said that the massive defeat, although it may have dented the confidence a bit, still presents enough positives to take into the second Test.
“Still a few bright spots. Roston batted really well in the first innings, Miguel stuck together well with Kemar and offered some resilience. It shows that we can perform in these conditions. It’s just a matter for us to dig a little deeper. If you look at this game, everyone who was successful gave themselves a really good chance upfront,” Holder added.
The second of the two Tests will start from August 30 at the Sabina Park in Jamaica.
