Tamil Nadu opener Murali Vijay was fined 10% of his match fee for expressing dissent over an on-field decision of caught behind that went against his team. Vijay was standing at slip when Ravichandran Ashwin’s consecutive appeals went in vain against Karnataka batsman Pawan Deshpande.

Cricket, being called the “gentleman’s game” has a very fine line when it comes to decency. In the modern era, showing off frustrations, celebrating beyond limits is a common sight. But there needs to be a line drawn. The lesson is well learnt in case on India and Tamil Nadu opener Murali Vijay.

On the first day of the Ranji Trophy encounter between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka in Dindigul, Vijay lost his cool and showed dissent after consecutive appeals from  Ravichandran Ashwin were turned down by the standing umpire Pandit.

The hosts were convinced of having the left-handed Pawan Deshpande caught behind on two occasions at 56, by ‘keeper N. Jagadeesan, little to the umpire’s disagreement.

The batsman was also adjudged not out twice for LBW appeals off the same bowler, once before and after the Tea break.

After end of day’s play, Tamil Nadu coach Diwakar Vasu asserted the requirement of new Technologies like DRS in important domestic tournaments like Ranji Trophy,  “It’s all a part of the game. It’s heat of the moment. The stakes are high. It would help if more technology is used in Ranji Trophy.”
