It was not just Rohit and Rahul who entertained the audience with their batting prowess; Evin Lewis did it too, but with his athleticism. A Khary Pierre half-tracker was on course to cross the boundary before Lewis efforts converted a six into a near run-out as Sharma was caught ball-watching.

India got off to a cautious start in the finale at the Wankhede, owing to the swing early on from Sheldon Cottrell. However, KL Rahul’s twin boundary in the second over sparked an acceleration as Rohit Sharma immediately found form in the following over. Sharma struck Cottrell’s delivery sweetly, and in the process, got to the 400th six of his career.

And it was not a one-man effort, as Rahul too joined the party with some lustrous blows from the other end. Left-armer Khary Pierre was not spared as Sharma found his groove and struck the ball sweetly, scoring meaty boundaries. It looked like there was almost nothing that the Windies fielders could do at that point in time to thwart Sharma’s big hits.

And having struck Pierre for a humongous six in the very first ball of the fifth over, it looked like Sharma was in the mood to decimate the poor left-armer. On the second ball of the over, the Mumbaikar once again laid back and smoked Pierre into the stands, almost, only for it to be stopped by the literal giant effort from Evin Lewis.

As the ball came off Sharma’s bat, just as all 33,000 people at Wankhede, the commentators and all the viewers watching on television thought it was heading for another maximum, Lewis lept and lept high enough to catch the ball, and flick it back into play as momentum got him across the advertisement hoardings. Immediately after going past the hoardings, the left-hander came running back into the field to throw the ball straight over the keeper’s hand to catch Sharma gasping for breath, almost catching him short of the crease.

The Indian opener was caught ball-watching as he was struggling on his way to a double, resulting in a near run-out and an opportunity to stop the run leaking for the Windies side. A certain moment of glory almost turned into calamity for both Rohit - one that was made possible by Lewis’ athleticism and presence of mind.

Here is how Twitter reacted to the incident:
