After scoring his maiden FC double century, Prithvi Shaw has mentioned that he needed to do something extraordinary to make a statement. Since his comeback from an eight-month doping ban, Shaw has been in scintillating form scoring heavily during recently-concluded SMAT and now in Ranji Trophy.

It was only a matter of two Test matches that Prithvi Shaw’s dream start to international cricket came down crashing. The U-19 World Cup-winning captain came into the Test side as a replacement for underperforming Shikhar Dhawan, riding on his tremendous First-class record, he was seen as a supremely-suited candidate for the opening slot. He did oblige with a scintillating hundred on debut against the West Indies last year.

After the successful series against the Windies on home soil, Shaw made it as an established opener into the side for the Australian Tour. But he returned with a twisted ankle from a practice game in Sydney that saw him being ruled out for the whole tour. Doping charges followed Shaw after his injury woes as he was examined to have consumed unpermissible substance which led to an eight-month ban.

From November 15, he was free to resume playing and he has been performing superbly since his return. First in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 tournament that saw he hit 63, 30, 64, 30 and 53. Now, in the Ranji Trophy, Shaw’s form seems to have reached another level. Playing for Mumbai in their first encounter of the campaign against Baroda, Shaw scored a magnificent 174-ball 200.

"It [double-century] was never on my mind. I was trying to score runs. That's it, But, as I got closer to 200 runs I thought it's a time to grab it. People do score hundreds, not that it's easy to score hundreds, but I felt kuch bada karna padega (I had to do something big)," Shaw was quoted as saying by The Indian Express after he hit his maiden first-class double.

He also scored a 62-ball 66 in the first innings. He feels this is the right time for him to make a statement about the game possess.

"I waited for this day, I feel this is the best time to show the world what kind of game I have. I believe I can do well and conquer things. To be honest I do think about the India comeback. I wasn't dropped and I was out of the team. It was not a nice feeling," he concluded.

With Shaw's batting prowess Mumbai won by a huge margin of 309 runs.

He became the 15th Indian batsman to score a hundred on Test debut and the youngest from the country to achieve the feat in his first Test. He has then lost his position to Mayank Agarwal due to injury and ban, who has performed outstandingly in the home series against South Africa along with opening partner KL Rahul. Shaw will have to continue his good form and make a real feast of the opportunities he get to make a comeback into the Indian side.
