Vijay Shankar has stated that he has improved a lot by watching senior players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and MS Dhoni bat and learnt a lot by observing how they approach their game. He has also added that it was important to assess situations and bat accordingly as per the plans.

Vijay Shankar has ended a wonderful tour to Australia and New Zealand with the Indian limited-overs side. He had contributed to the team with the bat and felt that he learnt a lot from the tour, especially watching the senior batsmen from the Indian side and playing the situations.

"These (Australia and New Zealand) two series I have learnt a lot. I might not have bowled a lot but I learnt to bowl in different conditions. In batting, just watching seniors like Virat, Rohit and Dhoni, how they go about their job, I learnt a lot,” Shankar said after the final T20I, reported PTI.

The Tamil Nadu batsman had gone to New Zealand representing the India A team in December. He was promoted to bat at No.3 for India in the absence of Virat Kohli during the T20I series against the Black Caps where he played a belligerent knock of 43 in 28 balls in the crucial decider on Sunday.

"It was a big surprise for me when they asked me to bat at three. That is a big thing. I was focussed on playing the situation. You need to be open anyway if you are playing for a team like India," the all-rounder said.

Vijay Shankar represented Delhi Daredevils in the last IPL and was traded to the Sunrisers Hyderabad for the upcoming season of the elite tournament. Although Shankar had not played a match-winning knock for India, he had already made his mark through his pivotal innings in the fifth ODI at Wellington and the performances in the T20 Internationals.

"Even the last game was a learning experience for me. I could have gone for single or a two than go for another boundary. I also had a very good opportunity to win this game for the team. If I can win matches for the team, that will automatically help me personally. For me, the most important thing is that I adapt quickly to different conditions and be consistent," concluded Shankar.
