While it has been seen numerous times that a keeper runs back to save the ball from hitting the boundary ropes, it is extremely rare to see the keeper trying to save it from hitting for the helmet. Tom Latham gave his all not to allow the ball from hitting the helmet but failed eventually.

In the 44th over of Bangaldesh’s innings, Mohammad Mithun failed to counter an outside off-stump delivery by Matt Henry and it was well on course to go to the wicket-keeper Tom Latham’s hands. However, the ball bounced in front of Latham, and as a result, he missed it too, giving the ball enough downtime to hit his helmet.

When Latham realised it, he started running backwards so as to stop the ball from hitting the helmet. It seemed like a battle to save the boundary as Latham had the same alacrity, if not more. He made a jump to collect the ball and in the process, his impact also put the helmet away. Mithun and Saifuddin were alert enough to steal the single when Latham was on his way to save the ball.

Latham’s attempt was a brilliant one, but the umpires decided to go upstairs anyway to see if he had indeed collected the ball safely before hitting the headgear. And when they found out that the attempt had a glitch, they awarded the opposition five penalty runs.
