Umpiring in Indian domestic cricket has never been close to decent as the two wrong decisions in favour of Cheteshwar Pujara in Ranji Trophy semi-final faced a lot of backlash. The same thing resurfaced in the Irani Cup today as umpire CK Nandan reversed the decision after initially declining it.

It was clearly one of the most bizarre decisions given on the cricket field. CK Nandan, touted as one of the best umpires in the country and is at the top of the list of BCCI’s attempt to send umpires to ICC elite panels, just underlined how much the standard of Indian umpiring has died down since the retirement of Shavir Tarapore.

On the penultimate ball of the 21st over in the match between Ranji Champions Vidarbha and the Rest of India, Krishnappa Gowtham bowled a slider from outside off to Vidarbha skipper Faiz Fazal to which the latter tried to push with soft hands. However, the ball beat Fazal’s outside edge to be gobbled up by wicket-keeper Ishan Kishan

Kishan, who was keeping close to the stumps, had heard a sound and was very loud in his appeal and was soon accompanied by Gowtham, but the umpire was hardly moved by that. He looked down, rejecting the appeal, and seeing that even ROI skipper Ajinkya Rahane turned back to return to his fielding position.

However, as the camera panned towards Nandan, it was seen that Nandan raised his finger to signal the end of Fazal’s innings. Amol Muzumdar, who was on air during that time, was stunned by that, but Fazal was more shocked by that. As the replay showed, Nandan had consulted leg-umpire Nitin Menon before declaring the batsman out, which was shocking because the leg-umpire had the worst possible angle to know anything about the edge.
