Former Indian cricketers lavished praise on Cheteshwar Pujara and Jasprit Bumrah who were the two standout performers in India’s historic 2-1 series triumph on Australian soil. Pujara scored a mammoth 521 runs while Bumrah bagged a total of 21 wickets across the four-match series.

Team India, under the leadership of Virat Kohli, made their way to a first-ever series win on Australian soil after they beat the hosts’ by a margin of 2-1. That margin could have been bigger if bad weather conditions had not halted play in the last Test match at the SCG, but Kohli & Co. will be satisfied with the end result.

Under the guidance of Ravi Shastri and in the absence of Steven Smith and David Warner, the Indians utterly dominated their opponents throughout the four-match saga and deserve every ounce of praise coming their way at the moment. Former Indian cricketers Harbhajan Singh and Ashish Nehra were quick to jump on the bandwagon as they singled out Cheteshwar Pujara and Jasprit Bumrah as the two standout performers from the Indian squad.

“India was competing against Australia and not against its own previous teams which went there. Please remember the standards were different. India’s previous teams touring Australia did their best.

“India’s main spinner doesn’t perform overseas and it is good that Kuldeep (Yadav) has emerged the main spinner now with Ravindra Jadeja. The key was Cheteshwar Pujara. He showed how Test cricket is to be played. Mayank (Agarwal) was a big plus too,” Harbhajan, sharing the mike on Sony as expert with Nehra, said.

Pujara, who was also adjudged as man of the series, scored a massive 521 runs at an average of 74.42. Meanwhile, Bumrah was the pick of the bowlers as he formed a formidable trio along with the likes of Ishant Sharma and Mohammad Shami. The young Gujarat pacer picked a total of 21 wickets at an average of 17 and an economy rate of 2.27.

“Bumrah exploited the conditions and showed he has the ability to excel even on flat pitches. He bowls quick and has a superb slower one and the yorker. He can bowl long spells. He is a complete package.”

“Don’t judge teams by stats alone. Not that India did not play well in South Africa and England. Not that teams in the past were not good enough to win Test series in South Africa and Australia. In today’s international cricket, only South Africa and England are at par with India. Had I bowled better we would have won the 2003-04 series. All teams have their moments. This is the moment for Virat Kohli’s team to cherish,” Nehra added.
