The quality of Big Bash League may not have been at the same level as their Indian counterparts, but boy does it cease to surprise you. Billy Stanlake provided everyone and himself a funny moment of the day as he failed to ground himself despite having 90% of his body inside the line of the crease.

The cult of Billy Stanlake is more about the oozing display of class he shows on the field, but his monumental mess-ups on the field would also make for a fine compilation. Stanlake was at it again against Sydney Thunders at the Spotless Stadium today.

After the Thunders put up a fine bowling performance and needed only one wicket to win the game, Daniel Sams bowled full toss to Liam O Connor, to which he hit it to mid-wicket and called for a quick single. Stanlake was well within his time to reach the other end, but while lunging to the popping crease, he lost the grip of his bat and that plugged in the soft turf next to the wicket.

It put “Big Billy” in a very uncomfortable position and the only option left for him was to lengthen his stride. However, he failed terribly at it and while lengthening his stride, he pushed his head forward like a professional sprinter and his feet were well outside.

The slow-motion replay then suggested that the tall player hovered mid-air when the bails where dislodged off by wicket-keeper Jay Lenton. After seeing the replay, Stanlake himself couldn’t control his laughter and the commentators Adam Gilchrist, Mark Waugh, and Kerry O’Keefe left in splits as well.
