Fielding has always played an important role in close matches especially in the shortest format of the game. In one of the recent games of Women’s Big Bash League in Australia, Erin Burns and keeper Alyssa Healy’s partnership as fielders helped Sydney Sixers to take the game into the super over.

Melbourne Renegades had a target of 132 to win in 20 overs in the second semi-final against Sydney Sixers and their opening batswoman Sophie Molineux was still out there at the crease. She had played a brilliant knock and in the final over, they needed 13 more to win and Sydney skipper Ellyse Perry took it on herself to bowl the last six balls of the game. After going for a four off the first ball she had conceded only six in the next four.

It went down to the wire with the batting side requiring another three runs to ensure a thrilling successful run-chase. Molineux was on strike on 53 with Perry bowling from over the wicket to the left-hander. It was a good length delivery outside the off stump and Molineux had enough room for a lofted shot. She cleared the in-field and the ball had already reached the fence but, Erina Burns had something else in her mind. A full-length dive by Burns at the deep cover saved the boundary and as the batters were trying to come back for a third, it was wicketkeeper Healy, who had received the ball from burns, effected a direct hit at the non-striker’s end to send Molineux back into the pavilion. The scores were levelled then and the match went into the super over as per the laws of T20 cricket.

The amazing fielding partnership by both Burns and Healy lifted the spirits of Sydney Sixers and they made it to the final by winning the match in the super over against the Renegades.
