Sourav Ganguly was furious at Indiaā€™s approach to the backend of the 338-run chase against England with MS Dhoni and Kedar Jadhav picking up singles with the required rate beyond 12. India eventually fell short by 31 runs with five wickets to spare, ending their unbeaten streak at World Cup.

With India needing 71 off the last five overs, Dhoni and Jadhav picked up 20 singles in their 31-ball stand, with only four balls crossing the boundary - three fours, and a six. Understandably, the Indian supporters and pundits alike were irritated by the lack of intent shown by the finishers. Several Indian fans, who paid big bucks to see India play live, simply walked out with an over or two to spare.Ā

On air, Sourav Ganguly was asked by his co-commentator, and former England captain, Nasser Hussain for an explanation to Indiaā€™s finish to the innings. As Ganguly tried to manufacture a response, Dhoni nudged a ball through the gap to pick up yet another single. At this, Ganguly gave up.Ā

ā€œI have no explanation for this. You asked me to explain what is happening, I canā€™t,ā€ Ganguly said to Hussain, reported Fox Sports.Ā

Much like many Indian fans, Ganguly shared the pain of seeing the Men in Blue not give it a go. He tore into the team management to clearly state what they expected of their big hitters in a steep run chase.

ā€œThe team has to make a decision whether they are just happy not getting out or are looking to win. The message has to go out that they should keep attempting big shots even if they get out. You canā€™t have a team losing in a chase with 5 wickets in hand,ā€ Ganguly said.Ā

Dhoni, especially, has come under tremendous pressure from former cricketers for his slow approach at this World Cup so far with the likes of Sanjay Manjrekar and Sachin Tendulkar expressing their displeasure.
