The Australian selectors have named a provisional 25-member squad for the Ashes which is set to commence from August 1. Cameron Bancroft, who was banned for nine months post the ball tampering saga has been included in the squad, while Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis have been overlooked.

The Australian National Selection panel named a provisional 25-member squad for the Ashes on Saturday, and have looked past all-rounders Marcus Stoinis and Glenn Maxwell, with opener Cameron Bancroft getting a chance to redeem himself post the ball tampering scandal.

The 25-member squad consists of the 15 players who are in England with the Australia A setup, seven members from Australia's World Cup side and three players, Peter Siddle, Cameron Bancroft and Marnus Labuschagne, who are currently playing County cricket.

All 25 players are set to go head to head with each other in a 12 vs 12 showdown between Australia and Australia 'A' which is set to commence from July 23, with the final squad set to be named after the much anticipated encounter which is set to give all players a fair chance to stake their clam for an Ashes spot.

"Cameron was making a fair amount of headway when he played Test cricket last for Australia and that was in South Africa," Australian selector Trever Hohns told cricket.com.au.

"What he's done is he's got on with business since he's been able to play again. He's playing with Durham in the County Championship, so he's doing everything he possibly can to get himself back into consideration and back into the Australian squad. He's scoring runs on a pretty regular basis so he has been included in that 25-man squad along with two others playing county cricket," he added, praising the 26-year-old opener.

Other notable inclusions in the squad are wicket-keeper Alex Carey, who is coming on the back of an incredible World Cup, and speedester James Pattinson, who last represented Australia in 2016.

Australia's preliminary 25-member squad:

Cameron Bancroft, Jackson Bird, Joe Burns, Alex Carey, Pat Cummins, Peter Handscomb, Marcus Harris, Josh Hazlewood, Jon Holland, Travis Head, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Marsh, Michael Neser, Tim Paine, Kurtis Patterson, James Pattinson, Will Pucovski, Peter Siddle, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Chris Tremain, Matthew Wade, David Warner
