Captains will no longer be suspended for slow over-rates, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced on Thursday after the board and full member council meeting. Earlier, two instances of slow over-rates in the same calendar year warranted a suspension for captains of the team.

In what will be a major relief for international skippers all over the world, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced that captains no longer will be suspended in case their team is found guilty of a slow over-rate offence. The decision was taken after the board and full member council meeting which was heldĀ in London on Thursday.

Instead, with the World Test Championships set to kick off from August 1, competition points will be docked from the teams which are found guilty of bowling with a slow over-rate, with two points set to be deducted for each over the team is behind.Ā

"In World Test Championship matches a team that is behind the required over rate at the end of a match will have two competition points deducted for each over it is behind," an official ICC statement read.

In addition to this, captains won't be solely held responsible for over-rate offences, with the ICC set to hold each and every member of the teamĀ gullible for the offence, and hence there will be no isolated suspensions or fines for captains.Ā

"Captains will no longer be suspended for repeated or serious overrate breaches. All players should be held equally responsible for slow over rates, and as such will be fined at the same level as the captain," the statement further read.Ā

As per the previous rule, teams which violated the over-rate rule twice in the same year were punished by handing over a suspension to the team's captain. The new rule will be effective from August 1, starting with the first Ashes Test between Australia and England.
