Kuldeep Yadav has admited that it was frustrating when he was not picking wickets but added that he kept believing in himself despite the bouts of criticism that he had to endure. Rohit Sharma heaped praise on the Kanpur-born spinner whom he labeled as India’s match-winning bowler.

India made their way to a comfortable 89-run (DLS method) win against arch rivals Pakistan on Sunday. While the likes of Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, and Virat Kohli starred with the bat, it was Vijay Shankar and Kuldeep Yadav who performed with the ball to earn India the much deserved win on the weekend.

Yadav had a below-par outing in this year’s IPL tournament with Kolkata Knight Riders as he picked up just four wickets from nine games. The talented wrist spinner came under severe criticism as many questioned his inclusion in the World Cup squad as well. However, the 23-year old claimed that he always believed in his abilities as he produced a gem of a delivery to dismiss Pakistan batsman Babar Azam.

"I've always believed in myself. It's only that sometimes you bowl well but don't get the results. It was a perfect delivery, deceiving the batsman and forcing him to make a mistake. Azam plays spin very well and he and Fakhar were going smoothly. It was very important to break that partnership.

"Everyone is talking about my rhythm but I never thought that I lost it. It's just happens sometimes that you don't pick wickets. As a player, it can be frustrating when you don't get wickets, for you and even your family. I am a player and when I don't get wickets, I start thinking why am I not getting wickets," Kuldeep said, reported TOI.

India vice-captain Rohit Sharma also heaped praise on the Kanpur lad as he called him India’s ‘match-winning’ bowler in the middle-overs.

"Kuldeep is someone who needs a lot of confidence before going into his spell. We've been talking about it, how big a matchwinner he's been for us in the last year or so. He has almost two wickets per game in ODIs (90 wickets in 47 matches) which is a hell of a record.

"He's our match-winning bowler in that middle-over phase, and today (Sunday) you saw how important those crucial wickets were. Of course, he didn't start the tournament the way he would like to, but our job is to just make sure that he gets that confidence, he gets that backing from the team. Kuldeep understands his bowling really well. It's just about giving him that confidence, making sure that he knows that he's one of our premier bowlers, and we've done that," Sharma added.
