Yuzvendra Chahal has stated that a bowler’s mindset plays a big role in determining what target the opposition are able to chase down. He further stated that defending such a low total has boosted their confidence and there were a lot of positives too in an otherwise unsatisfactory performance.

India were not at their best against minnows Afghanistan, but in the end, they managed to claw their way to a victory. It was mainly the batsmen who failed to do their job properly but the bowlers compensated for it with a gritty performance that was indeed a statement by them as to what they are capable of. A crucial part of the victory, leg spinner Yuzvendra Chahal too chose to focus on the silver lining.

“Obviously, most of the time when we bowl, our team has scored 340, 350 and especially when you score 240 and 230 there are some negative points and some positives. When you win these types of games you have more confidence you can score 240 or 250 and as bowlers we can defend this,” Chahal quoted, reported scroll.in.

India had batted first twice in the current edition of the tournament before the match against Afghanistan and had scored 330+ on both occasions. Though they had managed to defend the total either time, the match on Saturday was certainly a different challenge for the bowlers. However, they did step up as required and the wicket helped them too in slowing down their continental rivals, ultimately bowling them out 11 runs short of their own total.

“At first we thought we could go to 260, 270 but they bowled so well so we were like, if we can score 230, 240 it is not an easy wicket if we put more pressure on them so we would have a chance. Sometimes you can’t even defend 350 and sometimes you can defend 250. It’s all about your mindset,” Chahal explained.

Chahal himself continued his sensational form, as he picked up two wickets while only giving away 36 runs in his 10 overs. In 2019, he has 24 wickets to his name at an impressive average of 22.63. The wins mean India is now in the third spot on the table, having won four of their five matches and are still unbeaten. Only New Zealand shares this distinction with them.

“We knew this game was very crucial – win this game and we would go to the second or third position and after that we are playing England and West Indies and Sri Lanka. They are good teams,” Chahal concluded.
