Notwithstanding all the technology available on the disposal, still one of the toughest jobs in cricket is sitting in front of the computer to check out minor edges. However, the third umpire messing up the simple decision is not new too and the ground umpire today was left wandering about the same.

The pitch dished out for the India-Windies encounter at Old Trafford looked like a belter of a wicket - the kind Rohit Sharma enjoys the most. The first few shots that came off the Indian vice-captain’s bat was just a simple example of that but Kemar Roach showed him the way back to the pavilion with an angled delivery. However, the legality of the dismissal would be discussed till the cows come home and if any consensus would be reached is left for interpretation.

On the final delivery of the 6th over, Roach bowled a delivery which angled in after pitching on the good length spot and kept coming in with the angle. Rohit wanted to drive on the up, but the excessive inward angle resulted in Rohit failing to middle the delivery. First, it seemed like there was daylight between the bat and ball but the Windies team started appealing in unison for a caught behind appeal once Shai Hope gobbled the delivery behind the stumps.

The umpire instantly denied the wicket but Windies were confident and reviewed the decision. The third umpire found a spike on the UltraEdge but there was a confusion that did it come off the bat or pad and that seemed to have delayed the eventual verdict. By then, the on-field umpire though was convinced that it was not out but by hearing the “Out” decision on the microphone, he was left baffled.

He stretched his hand in surprise but there was nothing he could do to change the decision. After Rohit was declared out, he was left stunned as was his wife enjoying the game from the stands.
