A downcast Jason Holder admitted that his team were let down by missed chances in the field and an inconsistent batting performance throughout their World Cup campaign. After a heavy defeat to India on Thursday, the Windies became the third team to be knocked out of the 2019 World Cup.

After restricting India to 268/7, it seemed as though the West Indian bowlers had done enough to set up a tight game. But a quite shocking display with the bat saw them bundled out for a paltry 143, conceding a 125-run loss to the Men in Blue. Captain Holder reflected on what was a chance lost in a crucial encounter for the Windies.

"At the half-way point, we thought we could get there. The bowlers did a fantastic job on this surface, we couldn’t really ask them for more. I guess we just let ourselves down with the bat,” Holder said at the post-match presentation, reported ESPNCricinfo.

Coming into the World Cup in good form, the Windies were backed by the fans and pundits alike to be among the top four by the end of the tournament. Flooded with match winners in the form of some hard-hitting batsmen and sharp fast bowlers, it was a reasonable ask of the Windies to perform in the ODI format where they’ve had troubles in recent years.

However, with the thumping at the hands of India, their tournament has come to a sad and premature end. And skipper Jason Holder admitted that his team failed to capitalize on crucial moments throughout their campaign.

“We let ourselves down significantly. I don’t think we seized the crucial moments as we should’ve. We missed a few chances in the field, which cost us. The bowlers had a reasonable campaign, they delivered everything we asked of them. We didn’t really support them on the field and in terms of our batting, it was just too inconsistent,” Holder added.

However, the Windies skipper doesn’t believe it was all negative for them. He commended the positive performances from the youngsters in the team, but explained further that they need to learn to finish their jobs as well.

“We could have taken our chances. Still a lot of positives, Kemar Roach was very positive and Sheldon Cottrell as well. The youngsters as well have chipped in here and there. What I would ask of them is to go a little deeper and finish innings’ well,” Holder added.
