Mohammed Shami has solely credited himself for his terrific comeback at the international level stating that while God gave him the courage to fight, it was he who faced the challenges head-on. The confident bowler also said that clever thinking and execution are only things needed to succeed.

Shami has been the epitome of reincarnation this World Cup for India. After battling severe battles off the field, which included a crumbling marriage becoming public fodder leading to the player gaining weight and failing the Yo-Yo fitness test, the speedster has made his way back to the Indian side.

Not only that, but the player has saved his side’s sub-300 totals against Afghanistan and Windies with consecutive four-wicket hauls and now credited himself for the comeback despite Indan bowling coach Bharat Arun previously stating that the management had a huge role in his recovery.

“I have always been confident of my skills. I stay ready so that when I get my chance, I can execute my skills. I would like to give myself credit because I am the one who faced the biggest challenges in the last two years. Yes, god did give me the courage to fight my issues, be it fitness or family, but I confronted my challenges,” said Shami, reported The Hindu.

Shami had to put long hours in the gym to regain his fitness and pass the Yo-Yo test. And after paving the way back with sweat and hard work, the player looked his cheerful self on the field and sounded confident.

“I failed the Yo-Yo test, that’s true. But I improved my fitness, lost weight and my rhythm got better. I am maintaining my diet and am feeling good. I feel a force within me and the speed has increased. I know that whatever be the pitch I can express my abilities,” said Shami.

After all this, Shami was asked to warm the bench as India preferred the duo of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah to start with. However, with Kumar straining his hamstring, Shami was handed the chance and he grabbed it with both hands. However, the bowler stated that the important thing to stay confident of one’s abilities whether one is playing or not.

“It doesn’t matter if you are getting a chance to play or not. You just need to stay patient and be positive as you are here for the country. Only one thing matters, you must have a clever mind and your execution must be good. The rest doesn’t matter,” he concluded.
