Mumbai Indians’ Director of Cricket Operations, Zaheer Khan, has revealed that the entire MI squad, Jasprit Bumrah in particular, will benefit from the addition of Lasith Mailnga to the dressing room. The Mumbai franchise will begin their 2019 campaign against Delhi Capitals at the Wankhede Stadium.

The Mumbai Indians franchise is one of the more successful teams in the Indian Premier League and always enter every edition of the tournament as one of the ‘favorites’ to lift the trophy. Things aren’t any different this time around either as the Mahela Jayawardene-coached franchise will look to lay their hands on the trophy for a record fourth time in the league’s history.

Zaheer Khan, a former MI player, was appointed Director of Cricket Operations for the Mumbai team and has heaped praise on another returning player - Sri Lanka pacer Lasith Malinga. The Sri Lankan was a crucial figure in the rise of the Mumbai Indians and at his peak, he was certainly the best bowler in the league for almost a decade. In Malinga's absence, India youngster Jasprit Bumrah has risen to the challenge and emerged as Mumbai’s deadly weapon, especially in the death overs. In the past three seasons, Bumrah has scalped 15, 20 and 17 wickets respectively. Khan reckons that Bumrah will receive a major boost to play alongside idol Malinga.

“Bumrah kind of idolises him as well. Malinga in his peak and Bumrah are two similar kind of bowlers. Bumrah has benefitted spending time with Malinga,” Zaheer told HT reporters on Tuesday.

Malinga has been added to the MI squad following the 2018 season where he was part of the coaching staff. The former India pacer opined that Malinga’s presence will add valuable experience to a young squad as the latter remains the highest wicket-taker in the history of the league.

“We are excited about it (Malinga’s return). The kind of experience he brings to the table is immense. Not only with his bowling but when you’re in a game situation, it’s a relief for Rohit and other bowlers who trust his experience and the valuable advice.

“As a coaching staff, you can plan things, but when things are happening in real time, a proactive person on the field makes a huge difference in terms of decision making. And you have someone like Malinga as well,” the 2011 World cup winner added.
