Ricky Ponting has stated that Shreyas Iyer’s previous experience of leading various teams helped Delhi Capitals big-time as he did a good job as the successor to Gautam Gambhir. Ponting has also added that Iyer has become more comfortable as a leader and the management try to ease his workload.

Shreyas Iyer did an impressive job as the skipper of Delhi Capitals by leading the team to the play-offs for the first time since 2012. The turn-around of fortune, led by the young core, was also fuelled by a management group that had two of the best brains of the sport - Sourav Ganguly and Ricky Ponting, who assumed the role of mentor and head coach respectively.

The team blended effective strategy and instinct in a brilliant fashion and ensured that they stayed ahead of most star-studded teams cue - Royal Challengers Bangalore, Rajasthan Royals, and Sunrisers Hyderabad. For this turnaround, Ponting hailed the contribution of Shreyas Iyer and stated that the Mumbaikar, by leading many teams in the past, has proved to be a worthy successor to Gambhir’s thrones.

“Shreyas Iyer did a good job as the successor to Gautam Gambhir last year. He had previous experience of being a captain for India A, Mumbai and Delhi and has matured as a captain this year in the IPL. He has become more comfortable in his role this year and we try to make his work easy by supporting him in every manner,” Ponting said during the special show for DC Yeh Hai Nayi Dilli aired on Star Sport 1 Hindi.

After securing the third position on the points table, Delhi Capitals beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by two wickets in the Eliminator match to fix their eliminator 2 clash with Chennai Super Kings, who beat them in a convincing manner last night to secure their final date with Mumbai Indians.
