A BCCI official has revealed that 2011 World Cup winner, Yuvraj Singh, is contemplating hanging up his boots from international cricket and first-class cricket to explore other opportunities. Yuvraj aims to pursue a career in ICC approved foreign Twenty20 leagues in Canada and Ireland.

Yuvraj Singh was once considered to be one of the most vital cogs in the Indian cricket team alongside skipper MS Dhoni. The duo was touted as the ‘best finishers’ of the game for a long time and also won the inaugural ICC T20 trophy in 2007. Yuvraj was also a part of the 2011 India World Cup-winning squad and was named as the player of the tournament for his back-to-back maatch-winning performances.

However, post Singh’s fight with cancer, his subsequent struggles on the pitch have been evident in the last couple of years. A recent report in Scroll.in hinted that the talented left-handed batsman might be on the brink of calling it quits from international cricket and first-class cricket.

“Yuvraj is thinking of calling it quits from international and first-class cricket. He would like to speak to the BCCI and get more clarity on plying his trade in tournaments like GT20 (Canada), Euro T20 Slam in Ireland and Holland as he has offers,” a BCCI source told PTI sources on Sunday.

Singh, who played a part in Mumbai Indians’ IPL 2019 triumph this season, has come to terms with the fact that he is unlikely to play for India. That being said, the newly-emerged leagues in Canada and the new venture in Dublin and Amstelveen will get a lot of publicity if someone like Yuvraj joins them.

Last week, Irfan Pathan became the first Indian cricketer to put his name in the draft for the Caribbean Premier League. However, the former Indian cricketer is an active first-class player, and had not sought permission from the BCCI.

“Irfan was told to withdraw his name from the draft. As far as Yuvraj is concerned, we need to check the rules. Even if he retires from first-class cricket, he will still be an active T20 player registered under BCCI. The rule needs to be checked,” the BCCI source added.
