Vijay Shankar revealed that he has worked extensively on improving his bowling skills in recent weeks since the culmination of this year’s IPL season where he played for Sunrisers Hyderabad. The talented all-rounder added that being included in the Indian WC squad is very special for him.

Vijay Shankar only made his ODI debut for India at the start of 2019 but has come a long way since then. The Indian all-rounder grabbed headlines after he impressed during the away series against New Zealand earlier this year. He had a modest season with Sunrisers Hyderabad in the recently concluded IPL where he scored 244 runs from 15 matches as his side bowed out of the tournament with a loss in the eliminator against Delhi Capitals.

However, Shankar did enough to impress India selectors as he was included in the final 15-man squad that departed for England yesterday. The 28-year old all-rounder did well with the bat but needs vast improvement in the bowling department as he picked up just one wicket in this year’s IPL.

In a recent interview with Indiatoday, Shankar revealed that he has been working on his bowling ever since he completed his IPL stint with the Sunrisers.

"I made sure that I trained well after finishing off IPL. It wasn't anything really different but I worked a lot on my skills with my coach. It is all about being in good space and being confident. More than number four, I think it is about adapting quickly to the conditions and the situations there (England) that I might encounter. That is more important than to keep on thinking about this number four slot.

"It is important for me to work on all aspects of my game. Ever since the end of the Australia series, I have been working a lot on my bowling. I used IPL to a good effect. In every practice session, I worked really hard on my bowling. It was followed by extended bowling sessions in Chennai. All I can do is just to keep myself prepared and should be ready when I get a chance to do it for the team," Shankar said in a recent interview with Indiatoday.

While talking about his selection for the upcoming ICC World Cup 2019, Shankar added that being part of Virat Kohli’s team in England is a special moment in his career as he thanked his family and friend for their continued support.

"Being part of the World Cup team is definitely very special for any cricketer. Every time we wear this India jersey, it is very special for us. The best that has happened to me is that my family and friends never spoke about it when I was home during the past 8-10 days.

"They've been pretty normal and gave me space. I always enjoy my time whenever I am in Chennai. I have not only had a really good time with my friends but also been practicing hard since last one week and been very busy with it. So, it is all properly packed. It has been quite simple and calm for me, this period before the World Cup," Shankar added.
