Mark Wood has been given the all-clear by the England medical staff and will be in contention to feature in England’s WC opener against South Africa at the Oval on Thursday. Earlier, Wood was forced to leave the field during the warm-up match against Australia due to an issue with his calf muscle.

England pacer Mark Wood has been declared fit after he passed the fitness test with flying colours, an England spokesman announced on Monday. Wood, who plays for Durham in the domestic league, was forced to leave the field while bowling during Saturday's warm-up defeat against Australia in Southampton after feeling a slight niggle in his calf muscle.

The Chennai Super Kings pacer has suffered from repeated ankle problems throughout his career but hospital scans gave Wood the all-clear and he will be in contention to feature in Thursday's opening match of the World Cup against South Africa at the Oval.

Prior to England's final warm-up match against Afghanistan on Monday, the 29-year-old bowled on one of the practice pitches under the supervision of England assistant coach Chris Silverwood. Wood has been one of England's quickest bowlers of recent years and will be one of England skipper Eoin Morgan’s top attacking threats with the ball along with Jofra Archer.
