Young batsman Prithvi Shaw has returned from an eight-month ban and has been named in the Mumbai squad for the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament. Shaw, who recently turned 20, will be eligible to play from November 17, effectively for the game against Assam in the league phase of the national event.

After making a memorable Test debut for India against the West Indies at home, Shaw was picked for the tour of Australia but was forced to pull out due to injury. Although he featured for Delhi Capitals in the IPL earlier this year, the BCCI handed him a retrospective ban from all forms of cricket on July 30 after he failed a dope test during the Mushtaq Ali T20 trophy in March.

Mumbai, unbeaten in the tournament thus far having won all five of their games, announced the 15-member squad for the last two league games on Thursday. As Shaw’s ban ends on Friday, it is expected that he will return to action on November 17 when Mumbai takes on Assam in their last league game at the Wankhede stadium.

When he’d turned 20 — on November 9 — Shaw had promised via his social media account that he will return to the field a new man.

“I turn 20 today. I assure it will be Prithvi Shaw 2.0 going forward. Thank u for all the good wishes & support. Will be back in action soon. #motivation #hardwork #believe,” he had tweeted on his birthday, reported the Indian Express.

Mumbai will rely on their skipper Suryakumar Yadav, in-form Shreyas Iyer and all-rounder Shivam Dube to continue their charge as they head into the super league stage.
