The Kolkata Knight Riders have sprung a surprise or two by releasing players like Chris Lynn and Robin Uthappa who have been consistently a part of their starting eleven. KKR have released several other players which leaves them now with the option of filling 11 domestic and 4 foreign slots.

The KKR team management is thinking something of a rebuild as they have raised a few eyebrows by releasing the likes of Chris Lynn, Piyush Chawla, and Robin Uthappa, though they will have a chance to buy them back at a lower price in the upcoming IPL auction. Lynn's injury-prone body and Uthappa's poor form of late might be the reason.

They have also released all-rounder Carlos Brathwaite, who was originally a cover for star Andre Russell, as he had failed to contribute a lot to the team. Young Protea quick Anrich Nortje has also been released as he looked less than impressive in South Africa's Test tour to India.

KKR, on the other hand, has shown faith in domestic players like Rinku Singh, Nitish Rana, Shubman Gill, etc. with their usual match-winners like Sunil Narine and Andre Russell and have also traded in Siddhesh Lad from Mumbai Indians. Skipper Dinesh Karthik will look to build on this strong core of players and hope to buy some players in the auction to cover all the bases with Rs.36.65 crores in the kitty to spend.

Retained players:

Dinesh Karthik, Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, Kuldeep Yadav, Shubman Gill, Lockie Ferguson, Nitish Rana, Rinku Singh, Prasidh Krishna, Sandeep Warrier, Harry Gurney, Kamlesh Nagarkoti, Shivam Mavi.

Released players:

Chris Lynn, Carlos Brathwaite, Robin Uthappa, Piyush Chawla, Nikhil Naik, KC Cariappa, Joe Denly, Srikant Munde, Yarra Prithviraj, Anrich Nortje.
