Despite scoring runs for fun in the longest version of the game, Mayank Agarwal is nowhere in the scene as far as limited-over series is concerned. A BCCI source has revealed that the Karnataka batsman will have to score heavily in the Indian Premier League in order to make it to the LOI teams.

Initially, a replacement for an injured Prithvi Shaw, Karnataka opener Mayank Agarwal became the talk of the town with his unending desire to score runs each time he steps onto the field. Not only does he have two double-centuries in just eight Test matches, but Agarwal also became the fulcrum of Karnataka winning this year's Vijay Hazare Trophy by beating Tamil Nadu in the final. The run of form was hard to ignore, but a BCCI source has revealed that Agarwal needs to have a splendid IPL in order to find a spot in the limited-overs format.

"Where is the space in the opening department in the limited-overs team? Rohit (Sharma) and Shikhar (Dhawan) are your established openers. There's no slot at the top for even someone like KL Rahul now. Virat (Kohli) will come back into the team as well. Players can go through ups and downs. Mayank can only come in only if Rohit or Shikhar want to take rest, but he won't be rushed into the T20 side," said a BCCI source, reported the Times of India.

While the common perception about Agarwal is an excellent red-ball player, it must be noted that the opener, who was a late replacement for Vijay Shankar during the World Cup in UK, has a total of 13 centuries in List A cricket. An average of 50.90 and a strike rate of 101.57 leave a little doubt about his quality but in order to break it to the Indian team, the player needs to have a strong IPL season.

"Let him score runs in the IPL. Firstly, he has to be played consistently by his franchise," the official added.
