After Alviro Petersen, who took to social media to comment Gulam Bodi's prison a good day for cricket, Kevin Pietersen fired a tweet of his own which triggered a war of words on Twitter. Dale Steyn further opened up on the issue, saying 'it was a sad day for cricket' because a teammate was involved.
On Friday, former South African batsman Gulam Bodi has been sentenced to five years in prison after pleading guilty to eight charges of corruption in a landmark case in South Africa. The sentence came under the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act of 2004, came into effect in the aftermath of the Hansie Cronje match-fixing scandal in 2000.
Apart from Bodi, six other players, Ethy Mbhalati, Alviro Petersen, Thami Tsolekile, Jean Symes, Lonwabo Tsotsobe and Pumi Matshikwe received bans of between two and 12 years, among whom, Petersen served his ban and returned to working as a commentator. Once the sentence was passed, Petersen, who was at the Commercial Crimes Court in Pretoria for Bodi's sentencing, took to Twitter to share his opinion, and said, "Good day for cricket!!! Gulam Bodi just been sentenced to 5 years in prison. He will apply for leave to appeal and to extend bail his bail, pending the outcome of the appeal.’
Good day for cricket!!!

Gulam Bodi just been sentenced to 5 years in prison.
He will apply for leave to Appeal and to extend bail his bail, pending the outcome of the appeal.
That, however, didn't go down well with Kevin Pietersen, who found it amusing that Alviro, who himself was banned for a couple of years in the past, was rejoicing the sentence passed to one of his former teammates.
You’ve really tweeted this when YOU were banned for two years for the part YOU played?!?!
— Kevin Pietersen🦏 (@KP24) October 18, 2019
Wow!
Alviro instantly fired back with a tweet of his own, criticising Kevin Pietersen for his involvement in text-gate and being banned for the Newlands Test in 2012.Â
What's wrong with it?
— Alviro Petersen (@AlviroPetersen) October 18, 2019
You seem to know a lot, why was I banned for 2 years?
While you are busy explaining, explain;
1. Reporting your captain to us in 2012, mid series?
2. Newlands test?
That's it, FOR NOW...!!
However, KP found a supporter in the form of Dale Steyn, who played cricket with both Alviro - with the national team - and KP - in franchise cricket - as he stated that it is a "sad day for cricket" and rejoicing the fall of a former teammate is not good. That, however, led to Alviro apologising, while clarifying his stance.
I think it’s a sad day for cricket.

It’s a sad day when the last person who should take the moral high ground, rejoices in the downfall of someone that used to be their teammate and friend.
Dale, let me clarify my position. I meant it is a 'good day for cricket' in relation to the sentence handed down.

That will deter others from engaging in match fixing, because there is a precedent now.
My apologies if my tweet came across as rejoicing it was never my intention
