Much to the relief of fans, according to bowling coach Bharat Arun, India's ace paceman Jasprit Bumrah won't be undergoing surgery for his back injury and is expected to heal naturally before the New Zealand tour. Earlier, it was revealed that Bumrah will be sitting out of the entire home season.

Bowling spearhead Jasprit Bumrah will be missing the remainder of the home season, which includes limited over series with Bangladesh, West Indies and Sri Lanka.

According to a report, Bumrah visited the UK and consulted specialists to treat the back problem earlier in October. But still we don't know about the nature of the injury, except that its a minor one according to a BCCI press release.

"Fast bowling is an unnatural activity. Despite our best efforts there can be no guarantees. We expect Bumrah to be back sooner than later, hopefully in time for the New Zealand Test series that is our next big challenge," Arun told the Hindu. "As of now, he doesn't need surgery."

The better part of this story is the resurgence of Umesh Yadav as a Test bowler. Even in the absence of Bumrah, India has managed to scalp 20 wickets in consecutive matches and it includes 11 of Umesh.

Coach Arun was particularly impressed by the improved version of Umesh as he appreciated his accurate short bowling and also went on to say that he and Mohammed Shami make a deadly duo.

"He's strong and quick and now he is bowling in better channels, making the batsman play around the off stump," Arun said. "He's got reverse swing, has a nasty short ball. He and Shami, who is fast, accurate and dangerous, are a potent combination."

Arun also talked about the spin duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja who seem to be in a competition to become the No. 1 Test bowler for India. He also said that the team will be choosing on the basis of conditions if they have to pick one of the two.

On the other hand, Jadeja seems to have an upper hand in this battle given his superior batting and fielding skills which have been India’s saviour in overseas endeavours.

"He's among the best spinners in the world, top class, and is approaching 400 Test wickets," Arun said of Ashwin. "In fact, Ashwin went to England and Australia as our No. 1 spinner and then ran into fitness issues. Ravindra Jadeja grabbed his chance, giving us control with the ball, solidity with the bat and fielding brilliantly.

"Away from home, if we have to pick one of the two in the eleven, it will be horses for courses looking at the conditions and the opposition. Then we have Kuldeep Yadav who picked five with his wrist spin in his last Test, in Sydney. We have an embarrassment of riches."
