Experience of former players needed in national setup, feels Faf du Plessis
South Africa captain Faf du Plessis believes that the team can benefit from the experience of their former cricketers. However, the challenge related to this matter is the financial aspect and hence Cricket South Africa hasn’t been able to bring the experienced minds on board till date.
Faf du Plessis, said on Friday, that the most important thing going forward for South Africa would be clarity from the head members of the board. For stability to come to the national setup, full-time appointments of coaching staff and selectors needed to be made urgently.
South Africa were recently crushed by India 3-0 and the preceding World Cup exit and home defeat against Sri Lanka have put the team under, as Du Plessis said, "a massive red flag" position.
Following the World Cup exit, coach Ottis Gibson and his back-up staff and the selectors were sacked and then Corrie van Zyl and 37-year-old Enoch Nkwe were appointed in an interim capacity, the latter being in charge of the team that toured India. Du Plessis feels that the staff should be in full-time capacity rather than on an interim basis and this situation "needs to be resolved as soon as possible".
"The most important thing right now is clarity. Someone needs to make decisions, the director of cricket first and then filter down so everyone else can make decisions," du Plessis was quoted as saying by Sportstar.
The role of former players with respect to the national team, Faf believes, is crucial.
"It's obvious that we need to make more use of ex-players but it also comes with challenges," he said.
"I suppose it always comes down to finance. I know for a fact that we have tried to get them involved but the financial thing is a hurdle. We need experience in the team right now and that comes from ex-players."
