Jasprit Bumrah admits that as he is the new guy among the Indian fast bowling fraternity, he has a lot of questions to ask of more experienced campaigners like Ishant Sharma and Mohammed Shami. Bumrah believes that despite his Test career starting so well, he still has a lot to improve.

Since making against South Africa in 2018, Bumrah has played 12 Test matches – all away from home – and has picked up 61 wickets already, at an average of 19.31. Those are mighty impressive numbers, especially for a pacer from the subcontinent. However, Bumrah still looks up to the more experienced bowlers to gain information and improve his game each day.

“We have a good relationship with each other. So we constantly have discussions on what to improve and we back each other when any one of us is down. Ishant has played a lot of cricket than all of us. Shami has played a lot of cricket. I’m the new guy, so I try and ask them a lot of questions. They’ve played here before, so I ask them what works in different conditions and what to do when the wicket is not offering much,” Bumrah said at the end of play on Day 3, reported Cricbuzz.

However, there is no denying that the 25-year-old is one of the best bowlers in world cricket at the moment. Bumrah believes his performances have a lot to do with the confidence his team, and especially his skipper Virat Kohli has placed on him.

“Right now it has just been 10-12 matches, my career has just started. I am still trying to work hard on improving myself. We are playing a lot of matches in India as well, so I’m gathering experience now. The start has been good, but I will still try to learn and improve as much as I can. The captain has a lot of confidence, so that helps me to express myself with the ball and try whatever I want to do. Not only me, but each and every bowler has been backed by him (Kohli) so much,” he said.

India will head into Day 4 eager to finish off the rest of the West Indian batsmen as quickly as possible and wrap up the tour in an emphatic manner. The hosts were 45 for two at stumps, still requiring another 423 runs to win with two days of play left. The star man from the first innings, Bumrah, has so far gone wicketless in the second. His five overs have gone for 16 runs, but Bumrah is not worried about the stats as much as the team’s position in the match.

“I always look at team goals. So if we win the match, I’m fine if I don’t get wickets. My aim is how can I contribute towards the team’s success – taking wickets, creating pressure or however I can contribute. That is the way I go forward,” Bumrah said.
