Cricket is a cruel sport and it takes just one single moment for a player to turn from a hero into a zero. The English crowd started booing Steve Smith after Jack Leach 'finally' dismissed him on 118, but to their dismay, the left-armer had actually overstepped, resulting in a massive self-troll.
In cricket, there are small mistakes, there are big ones, and then there's the one that Jack Leach did today - that of taking the wicket of Steve Smith on a no-ball. Yes, you read that right. After toiling hard for 73 overs and trying every single method possible in the book to dismiss the Australian, England finally got their man in the first ball of the 84th over after Leach managed to find the outside edge of Smith, which was then taken safely by Ben Stokes.
A visibly furious Smith walked back to the pavilion realizing he'd missed a golden opportunity to turn his century into a daddy hundred, and as he walked back to the stands, the English crowd - unsurprisingly - let out a loud ring of boos, letting Smith know that they still hate him from the bottom of their hearts.Ā
But then, the on-field umpires decided to do a mandatory no-ball check, just in case Leach had overstepped. As the cameras showed the slow-mo replays, all eyes were on the big screen to see if the dismissal was legal or not. Then, to the English fans and players' dismay and Smith's rejoice, replays showed that Leach had indeed overstepped - by a good two to three inches - resulting in handing Smith another life.
By now, the umpire had signalled Smith to make his way back to the middle and this moment served as a massive self-troll for the English fans, who were left red-faced after realizing what had just happened. I mean, can you imagine the embarrassment after booing your heart out only for theĀ opposition batsman to continue batting just because your own player overstepped? Damn.
Last week it was Ravindra Jadeja and today it was Jack Leach. Maybe left-arm spinners need to be reminded that just being left-handed doesn't give them the privilege to overstep.
