Rishabh Pant needs to give himself time to display his phenomenal talent, reckons Lance Klusener
Lance Klusener has stated that Rishabh Pant has a lot of potential to become a great batsman but the youngster usually ends up rushing things causing him to not do justice to his talent. He advised Pant to learn from his mistakes and take help from all the experience around him to become better.
Rishabh Pant has seen a quick rise from being just another domestic player to becoming a mainstay in the Indiant team across all the three formats after some consistent performances for his franchise and Delhi. However, he has not been able to live upto his potential so far for the Men in Blue, averaging less than 23 in both the limited over formats of the game. South African batting Lance Klusener has put forth his take on the reason behind the same.
“It would be hard for me to pinpoint but with a phenomenal talent like that, one always tends to get a bit ahead of himself. He needs to give himself time to get in and that bit of time will allow him to showcase his talent,” Klusener was reported saying by TOI.
A great batsman himself, Klusener had accumulated 220 caps for the Proteas in his playing days and was also named the 1999 ICC World Cup player of the tournament. Thus, he has quite some experience of cricket at the highest level and had some crucial advice for the budding 21-year-old.
“What gets you ahead in international cricket is learning from others’ mistakes rather than making your own mistakes along the way and learning. I will tell you why. You can learn from your own mistakes but it will take a lot more time to realise, correct and become a better player using that process. If you look at the mistakes others are making, you will learn quickly and thus improve fast,” said Klusener.
Pant is deemed to be the future of Indian cricket and is expected to carry forward the legacy created by one of the best batsmen India has ever seen, MS Dhoni.
“It’s wonderful to have the talent like Rishabh in the twilight years of MS Dhoni’s career. From an Indian point of view, maybe they should try and get him to contribute more. He has some wonderful coaches and players around him so take their advice but at the same time don’t curb your natural talent,” Klusener added.
The 48-year-old has worked with Pant in the past after having worked as a batting consultant for the Delhi team in the limited over formats last season. He admitted he is considering reassuming the role for the upcoming season.
“I haven’t yet decided but I would like to come back. There are a few offers that I am contemplating. One is Bangladesh Premier League the dates of which, I believe, have been deferred and now clashing with Mushtaq Ali,” he signed off.
